I had the idea to do a post about who some of my auto buy authors are.. and needless to say I had some trouble thinking about who they are? This is a Top 5 with a slight exception for one author!
When I was trying to think up ideas for a blog post I mentioned this idea to my friend Christine and she loved the idea so much she did her own Top 5 list, check it out on her blog WeeReader!
I. V.E. SCHWAB
V.E. Schwab, otherwise known as Victoria Schwab, is a recent discovery for me. I only read A Darker Shade of Magic last year and I instantly knew I needed to read more of her work. The only V.E. Schwab book I have left to read is Vicious and it’s high up on my priority list.. I just need to actually get my hands on a copy.
Schwab has no upcoming releases under this pseudonym, but someday she plans on writing a sequel to Vicious (titled Vengeful) and a book called The Invisible Life of Addie La Rue where a woman sells her soul to gain the ability to live forever and is then cursed by the devil to be forgotten by everyone she ever meets. I was sold the second I saw the book was affectionately called “The Devil Book”.
II. ERIN MORGENSTERN
If you know me at all you’ll know that in early 2015 I fell in love with The Night Circus and ever since I have been (impatiently) waiting for Erin Morgenstern to announce something, anything really, about her next book.
I honestly don’t care what it is.. the millisecond this woman announces her next book I’m going to be so overjoyed it will probably drive all my friends mad because it’ll be all I talk about until the book is in my hands (and probably for months after I read it).
Seriously though.. I need another book by this woman in my life immediately. But until that day comes I’ll just have to live with my continued obsession with The Night Circus to satisfy my desire for more Erin Morgenstern.
III. LEIGH BARDUGO
I couldn’t do a list of authors without including the magnificent Leigh Bardugo! Ever since I read Leigh’s Grisha trilogy back in 2015 I haven’t looked back.
To date I’ve read nearly everything she’s released, the only thing I have left to read is Crooked Kingdom and I hope to have read that before the year is over and for those all caught up on her work Leigh is gracing our shelves with two new books this year. Wonder Woman is releasing in August and The Language of Thorns will be coming out in September.
I’m most looking forward to The Language of Thorns and reading her collection of short stories from the Grishaverse. But I can’t resist seeing Leigh write something not in the Grishaverse so Wonder Woman is a definite must have!
IV. A.G. HOWARD
If you don’t recognize this author’s name then I’m clearly not mentioning her enough. A.G. Howard is the author of the Splintered trilogy, which is one of my favourite Alice in Wonderland re-imaginings I’ve read to date.
Sadly the Splintered trilogy and her short story in the Slasher Girls and Monster Boys anthology are the only pieces of her work I’ve read. Which is disappointing because I always instantly add her work to my GoodReads to-read list whenever she announces something new.. I just haven’t actually gotten around to reading her most recent releases.
Recently Howard has released a YA Phantom of the Opera inspired retelling called RoseBlood, and a New Adult book called The Architect of Song. The sequel to The Architect of Song, titled The Hummingbird Heart, is set to release in August.
V. CASSANDRA CLARE
Every year Cassie Clare releases at least one new Shadowhunter book, and every year I automatically buy it. It’s no secret that Cassie’s Shadowhunter books are some of favourites, I adore every single one of them and will admittedly get a little too protective over the characters.. but I have zero interest in reading Cassie’s Middle Grade series (co-written with Holly Black).
So because of my lack of desire to read The Iron Trials series I can’t 100% say Cassie is a fully fledged auto buy author. I will always buy her Shadowhunter books but I’m not sure Cassie will ever meet my definition for auto buy author.
But in the mean time Cassie has what seems to be a never-ending list of books to write in the Shadowhunter world! At the end of May we get Lord of Shadows, the second book in her The Dark Artifices trilogy, and in November 2017 (or March 2018 according to GoodReads now) Cassie is teaming up with Wesley Chu to write an adult Magnus Bane trilogy.
So there you have it! My Top 5 Auto Buy Author list. I’m always looking for recommendations, and lately I’ve been wanting to delve further into Adult Fantasy or Science Fiction books so if you have any recommendations let me know in the comments and I’ll check them out.
