Episode 2: The Descent Into Hell Isn’t Easy
Welcome back! I know this.. review/ weekly episode rant is a smidgen late, but I hope you can forgive my lack of consistency. I have been up to my elbows in school priorities.
Anyways last weeks episode of Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments gave us a bigger look into the Institute, and we met Hodge Starkweather. It’s definitely way too soon for me to form an opinion on Hodge, but so far I will say I’m willing to give him a chance to prove he’s Hodge material.
In my rant on the pilot episode I briefly mentioned my opinion on a few of the actors chosen for a couple of the characters, and I thought this week I’d give my opinion on a couple of the others, specifically Clary and Izzy. Our leading lady Miss Katherine McNamara plays Clary Fray our confused almost-heroine. So far I am not a fan, and I honestly don’t think it has anything to do with their choice of actress, I’m 85% sure it’s the writing that’s to blame here. There is only so much an actor/ actress can do to make up for bad writing and Kat just hasn’t been able to help me get past it.
During one scene at the end of the episode Clary was supposedly frightened because her best friend had been taken by “The Night Children”. I didn’t feel the emotional connection in that moment, I did not believe that Clary was even remotely worried for Simon at all and that she was just going through the motions of being concerned. I am hoping that with time the writing will improve and Kat will tap into the character and up her game, but for now I cringe whenever Clary even starts to speak.
Then there’s Izzy. Isabelle Lightwood. I was worried about whoever was given the role of our little spitfire, but thus far I think Emeraude Toubia is doing a fantastic job. Izzy is not an easy character to portray as she is more than meets the eye. For those who have read the books we know this already, but the true test will be when Emeraude has to be more than just the sexy, tough Izzy. That being said I am excited to see what’s to come as far as our dear Izzy is concerned.
Leaving the characters alone for a minute (let’s be honest I could probably do multiple posts on my opinions in that department) and delve into the show itself. Probably my biggest complaint of the show so far is the special effects used to portray a Shadowhunters “demon hunting abilities”. I do not for one second think it’s necessary to have their abilities be shown using special effects. I’m not going to rant about it, even though I totally have (mostly to myself.. alone.. in my room..), I’ll just chalk it all up to a personal opinion and move on.
Overall I thought the second episode was alright, I’m trying really hard to appreciate the show as it’s own thing and not criticize it too hard for it’s differences/ similarities to the books. Because in the end that’s exactly what the show is, it’s own piece of art that needs to be appreciated and critiqued on it’s own merits.
Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments returns with a new episode February 16th.
